Red to blue card: how the plant NVQ works

How to upgrade from an NPORS or CPCS red Trained Operator card to the blue Competent Operator card with a Level 2 NVQ.

By Peter Pole, director and lead trainer

Your red card gets you on site. Your blue card keeps you there. Here's how the upgrade works.

Why you need the NVQ

When you pass your plant test without already holding the NVQ, you get a Trained Operator (red) card valid for two years. It shows you've been trained and are now building experience. It can't be renewed, so within those two years you need to achieve the Level 2 NVQ for your category of plant.

Complete it and you upgrade to the Competent Operator (blue) card, valid for five years.

How the NVQ is assessed

An NVQ proves competence in real working conditions rather than in a classroom. An assessor visits you on site, watches you work, and helps you build a portfolio of evidence from the job you're already doing. There's no need to take weeks off.

Our NVQs include:

  • On-site assessment
  • Portfolio and evidence building support
  • Assessor guidance and check-ins
  • Competence sign-off, leading to your blue card upgrade

How long it takes and what it costs

Our Level 2 NVQs take between 8 weeks and 6 months, depending on the learner, and are £650 + VAT per category.

Which categories we cover

180 excavator, 360 excavator, articulated dump truck, forklift, forward tipping dumper, lorry loader, loading shovel, ride-on roller, scissor type MEWP, skid steer loader, telehandler, tractor and traffic marshal.

Start early

If your red card has less than a year left, start now. Building evidence takes time, and a lapsed card can mean time off site.
