Not sure which NPORS test route you need? It depends where you're starting from. There are three, and picking the right one saves you time and money.
Novice: starting from zero
For operators with little or no experience on the machine. No prior experience is needed. You get full training first, then the theory test and practical assessment.
How long depends on the machine: typically 2 days for an ATV or 4x4, 3 days for a forward tipping dumper, roller or tractor, 5 days for a telehandler or forklift, and up to 10 days for an excavator.
Experienced worker test: you know the job, you just need the card
For operators who already run the machine but don't hold the ticket. It's usually one day and goes straight to the theory test plus practical assessment, with no training days.
We see a lot of experienced operators who've been driving excavators for years but never got the ticket. We can sort that in a day.
Refresher: dust off the skills
For when your card's expiring or you've been off the machine for a while. Half a day to one day to sharpen up, then the re-test.
How to choose
- Never operated the machine? Novice.
- Use it regularly but no card? Experienced worker test.
- Had a card but it's expiring or you're rusty? Refresher.
If you're booking a team with mixed experience, we can split the group so the experienced operators test in a day while the novices get full training.
After the test
Pass, and you'll get your NPORS card for the category. If you don't already hold the relevant NVQ, it's the Trained Operator (red) card, valid for two years, during which you'll need to complete the Level 2 NVQ to upgrade to the five-year Competent Operator (blue) card.
